51 - frost

tfaw #51 - frost
This week - the temperature plummeted! We'ev been driving around (according to our car's thermometer) in -8 degree temperatures! We've heard that up in Nethybridge that it's got to -16 or so degrees... cold cold cold!

It's been snowing on and off too - and it's lying, so that's great news for us snow lovers! - up the hills soon - and off sledging with Poppy - just what you need for Christmas time!

Anyway, enjoy this last font from Gabi....

50 - ratmnumberone

ratm a-z
woo hoo! rage Against the Machine got the number one slot over the usual turgid ballad we all come to expect at christmas from the x factor programme...and that man that runs it / owns it / profits from it / tell stupid people what music is...

well, we've all heard the "RATM are signed to Sony too" - so what... at least their music is written by them , made by them, played by them - they got where they are with hard work, integrity and the ability to write a bloody good tune. Oh, and a fantastic campaign by Tracey & Jon on facebook...lots of lovely money for Shelter too...nice.

Anyway - I've decided to celebrate this event by making a typeface made up of photos of RATM... I hope that's cool witht he powers that be!

well done rage against the machine!

49 - tired travel

Tired Travel A-Z
We have just come back from Newcastle, a cultural battery re-charge before Christmas (and some Christmas shopping). We had hoped to update the blog when we were down there...but some technical difficulties gave us a big fail...never mind... we got on with relaxing!

We drove down on Sunday and pretty much did the journey in a one-er...so I was pretty beat... which gave me inspiration for this typeface. The idea is simple, roads...roads and roads! and getting all fuzzy and tired close to the end of the trip. We got there safely, so don't you worry your wee self.

48 - citySquare

I don't know if you know, but Aberdeen is currently undergoing some rather troublesome times financially... the Council get the least amount of funding from the Scottish Government than any where else in Scotland (per capita)... it's because we're seen as a "rich city" - thanks to the wonderful oil industry... you see, we have more millionaires than anywhere else (per square mile) outside of Chelsea. (apparently)... so, as we're told it's thanks to the oil industry, Aberdeen lives.

We obviously have a lot of local business men that have benefited greatly from this wonderful black gold gift - and they want to "give something back" - in the shape of a massive concrete square, covering over our only green space left in the city centre ("that doesn't have dead people in it")...

Let me rewind you a few years, back to when Peacock Visual Arts had full planning permission to build a fantastic, world class contemporary arts centre, skilfully, elegantly and beautifully woven into Union Terrace Gardens steep - unusable slopes by Architects, Brisac Gonzalez. This (on paper) seems like the perfect solution to not only bring Peacock's into a more visible and engaging space for Aberdonians to experience Art & Creativity at all levels, but to enhance and re-energise / re-populate the sadly under-visited gardens….

Fast forward to “just before PVA were going to start building”… and our friends, “the oil industry” pop up their heads and say “hold on… I want that land…err, for the People of Aberdeen, here’s £50 million if you will build….THIS!” .

"this time, this place, this generation"...'this' is an anagram of SHIT i might point out.

That “this” is a giant concrete square, raising the level of the Gardens to street level to “speed up access” from one side of the gardens to the other (of which will save 1 minute in walking). There are many arguments the backers of the plan are trying to convince the public why they should have this concrete square (instead of a re-populated existing garden) – “It will be a cultural centre for Aberdonians” (apparently size matters here – as peacock is “Small Beer”) – this point is sort of mooted by the fact that "Eighty per cent of the people who spend time in the square will have no interest in the arts." was mentioned in rebuttal to the purpose of PVA in Aberdeen. We’re also told (and I still can’t get my head around this one) that “We are by no means going to concrete over the gardens”

…so this has inspired my to make this “protest font”. – a duplicitous and double layered lie. In the Upper case, we have a respectable slab of space with bushes and trees, allegedly living happily around the space…whilst underneath, the sneaky lower case set is the car park we fear it is going to be…

An excellent point by point document by Fraser Denholm addresses all of the serious issues around this matter. I urge anyone to read it, and ask the right questions (any question!)…It’s just a shame that the belligerent and (apparently used to getting their own way) businessmen didn’t think about their approach – before wading in and usurping the already in place PVA plans. It’s a damn shame that we obviously have certain people in certain places that can suddenly do a U turn on a project that had full planning permission all because the whiff of money is too much to ignore. 50Million? Lots of lovely money and a very kind donation to the city…just a shame it’s being put into something apparently a lot of Aberdonians don’t want (and apparently little or no Aberdonians want). Oh, we’ll figure out where the other (minimum estimate) £90 – 100 + million is coming from….and we all know how civic planning budget have gone in the last few years…..

The long and the short of my position is –
I want to keep green space in the heart of Aberdeen.
I want to see a world class, sophisticated arts centre in Aberdeen.
I want Aberdonians to be able to engage and become interested in “the Arts” and I believe the PVA building can be that perfect conduit. Even if people don’t want to see “art” – they can rest assured that PVA will be the best concourse INTO the re-vitalised union Terrace gardens.

Sign this petition if you agree with me. Write letters to councillors, MSP’s and the press – please please please CARE and please FIND OUT INFORMATION FOR YOURSELF don’t let a rich and powerful media machine tell you what to think. (and for that matter, ME either - so do your research.)

47 - fading

fading number 47

We've been swamped recently...so much on, so much to do, so many jobs getting "in the way" of our fun fun fun...

We've neglected the TPYF project for several weeks now - a real shame! so, this week's typeface is inspired by our neglect - the fact that we're "fading just before the end"... we've only got a few more typefaces to go before 2010!... and we can't give up now!

fading away? we won't quit!

We'll be back on track in December - back to the one a week downloads... as planned wayyyy back at the start of the year!

46 - webbing (TPYF)

webbing number 46

TPYF (Their Past, Your Future) is a project for schools to explore the history of the armed forces.

Gabi and I were luck enough to be asked by the Gordon Highlanders to help them create workshops and activities to look at the GH history with artistic eyes.

We particularly liked the webbing / uniform typeface the class of Riverbank Primary School came up with... it was fantastic to see how they pupils looked for shapes and form within overyday objects to create letterforms. They'd really got the idea of using everyday objects to create new forms.

webbing for the TPYF project Gabi and Phil would like to thank all the schools & pupils involved in the project, and a special thanks to Aurelie Bureau for asking us to participate and plan projects with her at the Gordon Highlanders.

We Tied in the Typeface A Week project and worked with various schools and children to create new typefaces based on aspects of the histories they found most interesting.

The children were interested in many aspects - from chocolate rations to poppies for rememberance... It was a fantastic experience for us and the pupils, and we think we got some very interesting and exciting work from the project.

43 - flood!

G-R-A flood typeface
We traveled 44 miles to go to a kids party today, with the rain dinging down since 9 am this morning. We hit a few big puddles on the way there, and the rain keeps coming...

"this'll be fun on the way back!"...

Needless to say, one and a half hours at a party we have a lovely time, pass the parcel, eat soem nice party food, have some parental banter with our friends and "think about heading home" at 4pm... it's dark now...

We leave from Johnshaven negotiating big puddles and streams that have increased monumentally in only one hour, hit our first bend and what was a large puddle before, is now a lake that covers the road...  wowzers. we slow to a crawl through the new "brown sea" and have another 41 miles of this to go. Needless to say, plenty of twits on the road thinking they drive DUCKS and we even get to roadblocks the police have set up in Aberdeen. We make the journey home in 2 hours.

We've also had a tree fall down in the back garden, now the winds are up... crazy weather indeed!

42 - up

G-R-A up typeface

We took Poppy to the pictures for the first time ever this week - to see the new Pixar film UP. it's fantastic! Poppy was mesmerised by the "giant telly!" and was fascinated by the big seats and all the people coming in... when the lights dimmed, she was highly entertained...and started whispering to us!... a natural born cinema goer!

Up the movie by Pixar / Disney ©2009
Gabi decided to create a typeface based on the balloons used by Carl to take his house to South America. It's also quite fitting as Poppy has been to a few of her friends parties in Oct and Balloons keep being taken back to our house to be unserimonoiusly deflated over a few days...

41 - Skye Beach

During our holiday in Skye, Gabi, Poppy and I collected "stuff" from the beaches, as you do...shells and floatie bits... taking photos of the things we found.

So, Skye Beach is a culmination of memories from our hols... we really do want to go back and explore some more!

40 - fishing

We've been in Skye on holiday for the first time in three years...first time in skye, ever...and boy oh boy, is it spectacular!
We are particualarly blessed with an amazing appartment... a sweedish stylee home called "fiddlers retreat" thanks to a friend of gabi's mum... woderful!
I was bought a fishing rod by gabi, after parping on for weeks about "fishing in the sea at Skye"... I've not fished since I was 14 or 15... I have to say, everything cam flooding back (no pun intended!) - weights, sea floats, bait...casting... ah, it was a dream. So relaxing and calming, what a brilliant time I had...

I was catching Saithe (Sillex) and Red Cod mostly, but snagged a monster looking Bullfish, what a brute!

The Typeface was inspired by all the rig & set up... the equipment that seemed to be embedded into my memory after all these years...

38 - doves

GRA doves A-Z

It's been a sad week, after the wonderful NEOS event, we heard that artist, Jen Beattie, sadly passed away. We were invited by her very close friends (Susie Hunt and Lindsay Stewart) to paint Jen's coffin.

We arrived at Jen's on Sunday morning to see lots of Jen's friends and fellow artists painting the cardboard coffin in the studio, a rather sobering sight. A mixture of sadness, collective spirit and joy - we all worked together to create an amazing work of art for Jen.

Jen's family were very moved by the work, and very grateful for all our contributions...

Gabi was taking some time out with Poppy, taking a stroll through Jen & Jim's amazing garden, watching their white doves... inspiration for Gabi's tribute typeface to Jen. Rest in Peace Jen.

37 - NEOS @ Mill farm

To celebrate the end of NEOS, Gabi and I asked all the artists showing with us at Mill Farm, Kemnay to design a few characters to create a mash up typeface showcasing everyone's individual styles & ideas.

It was fun to see how everyone coped with the "brief" and interesting to see how asking people to write / draw / represent "letters" throws up real challenges… “what sort of shape do you want this?” “how do I draw this letter?”. It’s fascinating to see that the “rules” of known letters really can cause blocks to creative thinking…

We think everyone really produced interesting characters, reflecting their personalities and styles. It makes for a very personal typeface for us – as we had such an ace time with everyone during NEOS’09. So, we doubt our blog readers will “use” this typeface, but hope you can see that this is one of the strongest typefaces representing the “spirit” of this project! Inspired to create a typeface and join in?…

36 - NEOS Lino

We're "doing NEOS" this week (the North East Open Studios). It's Scotland's largest Open Studios with 222 artists, makers and galleries in this years catalogue (Which I (Phil) designed & set up for print)...

Being "slightly busy" at the weekend (with over 350+ visitors to our shared space in Kemnay) - we didn't have time to sort out a #TFAW entry on Sunday.

We're sharing a space with Anne Thomas, a print maker / designer who's come up from England to "go for her first open studios" (She's also our host, Susie Hunt's neice).

She's really cool and up for demoing her printmaking, giving away lino to kids and adults like they were sweeties - very interactive.

We'd headed to the studio today and talked about having missed the Sunday deadline for uploading this week's Typeface... and she then said "I can print my A-Z for you!"...

It's what we love, instant - expressive, sharing and collaborative. So! We thank Anne for her contribution, we're so happy when someone wants to contribute and use their skills to add to our project...

35 - ThrowUP!

Gabi and Phil are working really hard on getting ready for NEOS2009 - the North East Open Studios (Scotland's largest Open Studios event, don'tchaknow!)...so we've got a guest appearance From Mark Goss again! (yay!)

Mark Goss (Curious Fiend) has produced "Throw UP" as part of his 2009 degree show - and has been kind enough to share it with us...

The Graffiti inspired typeface is a doozie, check out Mark's poster for it! (also available for purchase on his website : http://curiousfiend.bigcartel.com/ )

We'd like to thank Mark for taking the time to send us his work, and for sharing it with us, we hope that you put his typeface to good use, and if you do use it, please send us (or Mark) and email.

34 - Black Tie

We are very lucky this week to have another guest contribution to TFAW...

Glasgow based Chris MacFarlane has been plotting his typeface for a while now fitting in the production of this free font into his busy schedule (thanks Chris!).

Chris said:

" 'Black Tie' was born one day whilst day-dreaming and playing with a cable tie that lay on my desk. The nature of the design instantly leant itself to creating almost any letter or number (in truth it was a lot more fiddly.) To make the characters appear 'organic' each one was formed separately rather than simply piecing shapes together in Photoshop."

33 - CuriousFiend (#1)

Well well well, roll up, roll up, roll up.
TypeFace A week have been graced with some amazing fonts for the new graduate, Mark Goss - creator of the Curious Fiend blog...
After Seeing Mark's work featured on the Creative Review blog we sent Mark an email enthused by his hand made type - and excellent style / application of typography... what a guy, just the sort of font work we're looking for!

Please visit Mark's blog - a fantastic resource for checking out what's going on down his way in Olde London Town.

We're so happy that Mark has got involved, and we wish him all the best for his future in the creative world, I think he'll go far...with his skills and energy, how could he not?

32 - DR Props

I got an email from Warp records this week...it's their 20th anniversary (I can't believe it either!) They are putting on lots of shows to celebrate this fact, and I was particularly stoked to see a shindig going down in Sheffield...

It was originally, cryptically announced as "Sheffield...soon...say no more" and I instantly thought of the Designers Republic (RIP?) And got all excited.

I'd also pre-ordered the amazing anniversary box set (WARP20 Box set) back in June straight away, after hearing of its creation (£100? - A BARGAIN)

So, it is with all the WARP / BLEEP / tDR excitement that I decided to create a DR inspired (ripped off, probably!) typeface. All the fun of the Autechre fair. 3nj01.

31 - Caran

Gordon Watt (Morning Glass Designs) has contributed another font for Typeface A Week...this font was his "main mission" for our project - so, we are very happy to present - Caran...here's some words by Gordon on its origins...

Caran is based almost entirely on the lettering in a wonderful piece of modern calligraphy, Cara Wallia Derelicta ("Dear Wales, all buggered up"), by David Jones, the famous Welsh artist and former student of Eric Gill. It represents my first attempt at a "calligraphic" typeface, one which I imagine might be used to good measure in a medium like stained glass.

More information on the original text, and a smallish image, can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/lfb89t

And a piece of work inspired by David Jones' work, by another Welsh calligrapher, tegwen Jones: http://tinyurl.com/mxyej5

30 - Gothic Door

Gabi and I were stuck in traffic this week - we're not used to that anymore...but, it's a great time to slow down and look around...and on the Kings gate (Aberdeen), I spied a really nice sandblasted typeface on a door - I didn't have my camera - and desperately tried to mentally note the Gothic / black letter-esque forms...

So, "Gothic Door" is an approximation, a guesstimate, a pastiche of the typeface I did see, perhaps it's more classical than this "retro futuristic" noodle I ended up with...I'll have to go photograph it for sure.

It kind of reminds me of a favourite 90's font (FF NewBerlin) I used to use a lot...but with a bit more "ostentation" about it? - check that "g" - doesn't that look like a road going no-where?! - perhaps it's all too subliminal... the Kerning is a bit squinky too... I'm going to have to look into the font creator upgrade!

This typeface is now unavailable for download - but will be included in the limited edition CD Rom of all 52 Typefaces at the beginning of 2010. 29 - untitled

This week's typeface is by a guest contributor, Mobius Engine... a force for mystery and restraint, Mobius Engine has sent us "Untitled"...

A Man of minimal (and very well chosen) words - no information has been sent - nor image to "showcase"... so we decided to add a simple 400*400 image (with his snazzy logo too!) and these minimal words to hopefully get you to dip your toe in the mysterious world of the Mobius Engine

28 - paperpop

The long road to completion is still ongoing at Claypots... this weekend we were stripping some delightful, perfumed, mouldy wall paper from the bedrooms...whilst dirty and laborious, it's quite satisfying when you get a big strip off in one go, I am sure you know what I mean...

We've decided to make a typeface based on peeling paper / paper cut outs...there are two "Styles" to the typeface, the uppercase has a decorative wall paper pattern going through it, and the lower case / numbers / special characters are all solid.

It's a bold, Saul Bass stylee retro / contemporary affair, which I am sure there are many uses for... have fun!
